How the diagnostic scales across recurring engagement shapes.

Engagements look different on the surface — sector, size, governance, technology stack. Underneath, they fall into recurring archetypes. Each archetype carries its own diagnostic emphasis, intervention pattern, and consequentiality follow-up. The Pattern Library is how the framework moves from single-case work to portfolio practice.

§1 · Recurring archetypes

A few shapes that have surfaced repeatedly.

Each is a way the response distance breaks. None of them shows up on a capability map.

  1. Instrumentation-rich, response-poor engagements

The organisation has the signals. It has the dashboards. It has the reports. What it doesn't have is a path from the signal to the decision. The response distance is downstream of detection.

  2. Authority-lagged transformation engagements

The diagnostic is right, the recommendation is sound, and the authority to act sits somewhere the conversation hasn't reached. The transformation can't land because the decision rights haven't moved with the strategy.

  3. Strategy-visible, architecture-invisible engagements

The strategy is articulated, the executive narrative is clear, and the architecture that would make it operational is nowhere in the conversation. The gap between intent and implementation has no instrumentation.

  4. Capability-map-complete, execution-stalled engagements

Every capability is mapped. Every owner is named. Every dependency is sequenced. The execution still hasn't moved in eighteen months. The binding constraint isn't in the map.

§2 · Quadrant-derived patterns

What's happening underneath each engagement.

Where the engagement archetypes describe what an engagement looks like on the surface, the quadrant-derived patterns name what's actually happening underneath. Each maps to a placement on the SRD Diagnostic Matrix.

  • Q1 · Short SRD · Low complexity Well-Instrumented. The baseline quadrant. Protect what works, automate where false-positive rates are bounded, and watch for silent drift to Q3. Deep dive →

  • Q2 · Short SRD · High complexity Augmented Frontier. The strategic prize. Where AI investment lands hardest and the upside justifies the discipline required to avoid the downside. Deep dive →

  • Q3 · Long SRD · Low complexity Instrumentation Gap. Simple signal, slow organisation. The fix is in the measurement pathway. Cheaper than the executive team expected. Deep dive →

  • Q4 · Long SRD · High complexity Slow-Complex Zone. Where most strategic failure lives. And where some organisations operate by deliberate design. Distinguishing pathology from posture before the intervention matters. Deep dive →

§3 · What each archetype carries

Engagement learning compounds.

For every archetype: the typical capability-stack signature, the most-likely binding constraint, the intervention pattern that has worked, and the consequentiality follow-up structure for verifying what changed.
